Calgary Opera opens the 2014-15 main stage season with the Canadian premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning opera Silent Night by Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell. Calgary Opera joins many other groups in commemorating the centenary of the start of WWI with this opera that was inspired by true events. It tells the story of a spontaneous truce on Christmas Eve 1914 when combatant troops laid down their weapons to celebrate the holiday together and bury their dead. It is moving. It is dramatic. It is a glimpse of humanity in the bloodiest of times.
A stellar cast includes Sally Dibblee as Anna Sorenson, Roger Honeywell as Nikolaus Sprink, Brett Polegato as Lt. Audebert, Daniel Okulitch as Lt. Horstmayer, Peter McGillivray as Father Palmer and James Westman as Lt. Gordon. The production is conducted by Joseph Mechavich and directed by David Gately. Silent Night premiered in 2011 in Minnesota to critical acclaim, sold-out performances and standing ovations for the entirety of its run.
